January: Bill decides to run for Congress against long time incumbent John Paul Hammerschmidt. Declines offer to assist John Doar, the chief counsel for the House Judiciary Committee's inquiry into the impeachment of President Richard Nixon. Hillary also receives an offer and accepts.
Spring: Bill begins an uphill campaign and meets valuable supporters making lifelong friends. Hillary visits Bill in Fayetteville and receives a teaching offer from Wylie Davis, dean of the University of Arkansas School of Law. She is undecided.
May: Bill secures runoff position in the Primary with 44 percent of the vote.
June: Wins Primary with 69 percent of the vote against State Sen. Gene Rainwater.
